If there’s one thing we know as a salon, it’s that long hair is never just long hair — it’s personality, confidence, softness and strength all in one. So for this week’s blog we sat down with our very own Salon Owner & Senior Hair Designer, Kerry, to talk trends, trims and the secret to hair that swishes instead of sits.
Q: Kerry, you specialise in long hair — what are clients usually asking for at the minute?
Kerry: Honestly, long layers are the vibe right now. Everyone wants that soft movement without losing length. The big one is:
“I don’t want too much off, but I want it to feel healthier.”
I hear that at least 10 times a day!
Q: What does a long-layer cut actually do for someone’s hair?
Kerry: It brings the hair back to life. Long hair can get heavy and flat, especially towards the ends. Layers give shape, bounce, and take the weight out where needed without making it wispy. It also helps curls and waves pop back up.
Q: A lot of clients worry that layers will make their hair thin — how do you avoid that?
Kerry: It’s all about placement. I tailor layers to the person’s density and face shape.
If someone has finer hair, I’ll keep layers longer and avoid over-texturising. Thick hair? I can remove bulk and create structure without losing thickness on the ends.
It’s never a one-size-fits-all approach.
Q: What kind of maintenance should someone expect with long hair?
Kerry: A trim every 10–12 weeks is the magic number — any longer and the ends start splitting up the hair shaft.
Also: hydration, hydration, hydration. Masks, oils, heat protection… long hair needs all the goodness because those ends are older and more fragile.
Q: Do long cuts suit everyone?
Kerry: Absolutely — but the shape has to be customised. Long hair works beautifully with face-framing layers, curtain bangs, or soft shaping around the jaw or cheekbone.
Done right, long cuts flatter every face.
Q: If someone wants to grow their hair, what’s your number-one tip?
Kerry: Regular micro-trims, good nutrition, minimal heat, and consistent homecare. Don’t panic — a tiny 1cm dusting every few months will actually help you grow more in the long run.
Q: What’s trending right now for long hair?
Kerry: Soft, cascading layers. Natural movement. Expensive-looking healthy ends. Face-framing that blends seamlessly into the cut.
Think effortless — but polished.
